Keeneland Opening Day, Graded Stakes, Best Bets

Keeneland Racing is back with a kickoff of Graded Stakes races for Friday and Saturday. Keeneland’s fall meet kick off Friday October 7th, and will run until October 29th. After that its Breeders Cup week and there are a few Win and You’re In races left.

The Friday card is highlighted with the running of the Phoenix (G2), Jessamine(G2 Turf), and the Darley Alcibiades(G1). The Jessamine and Darley being for 2 Year Olds both going 1 1/16 Mile. Both races have horses that have raced only once and are looking for Graded Stakes glory in hope for bigger things in the fall meet. During the Fall Meet, Keeneland will offer 22 stakes worth a record $8.9 million. The season’s richest race is the $1 million Coolmore Turf Mile (G1), a Breeders’ Cup Challenge race that anchors Saturday of Fall Stars Weekend.

Several of the 12 in the main body of Jessamine are coming off starts at the all-turf Kentucky Downs meeting, which was especially popular as Churchill Downs did not conduct turf racing at its September meet. Towhead, C C Cruise Control, and Knockyoursocksoff were second, third, and fourth in the $500,000 Juvenile Fillies. Towhead was second by a nose to Chop Chop after leading early, with those two nine lengths clear of the rest of this field. Towhead earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 71, the best in this field.

Lucky Seven Stable’s Fun and Feisty, winner of the Pocahontas (G3) and D. J. Stable’s Wonder Wheel, runner-up in the Spinaway (G1) at Saratoga, headline a field of 14 2-year-old fillies entered Tuesday for Friday’s 71st running of the $500,000 Darley Alcibiades (G1). A winner of two of four starts, Fun and Feisty is trained by five-time Darley Alcibiades winner Kenny McPeek.

  1. I too like Necker Island in the Phoenix Stakes…In the 8th #3 Delight over the 6/11…The Alcibiades looks wide open to me I boxed the 9-10-11 in the tri and made a WP bet on Just Cindy hoping her last is a toss because of the start…10th #6 Light Stars was rank in last two races so I’m giving her another chance and putting her in combos with Bourbon & Soft Touch…Good Luck!

    1. Good Luck Jay, Just Cindy looks to be a challenger, definitely had a terrible start last out. Race 4 I really like the longshot Robo Man too.

      1. JUST CINDY WAS JUST AWFUL. I’M NOT SURE WHAT’S UP WITH NECKER ISLAND. HE USED TO SHOW A LITTLE EARLY SPEED AND I EXPECTED HIM TO BE MID-PACK. THAT DIDN’T HAPPEN.
